Manuel Chantre is a new media artist and composer who lives in Montreal. He is interested in the three-dimensional narrative properties permitted by translucent multi-screen projections, immersive environments, light beams, translucent structures as well as dome and panoramic screens. He seeks to further explore presentation style to create non-linear narratives that encourage and unearth the audience members' respective memories and experiences. His audiovisual performances, immersive installations and sculptures include music, programming, video, 3D animation, audio art, light and interactivity.

His works are produced or presented by renowned international institutions in media art, including the Society for Arts and technology [SAT] (CA), International Digital Art Biennal (BIAN) (CA), Elektra Festival (CA), Mutek (CA), File Electronic Language International Festival (BR), Mapping Festival (CH), The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (TW), le Mois-Multi (CA), Vidéographe (CA), Eastern Bloc (CA), le Festival du Nouveau Cinéma (CA), Biennale de sculpture de Saint-Jean-Port-Joli (CA), Festival Maintenant (FR), Center3 for Print and Media Art (CA), Video Pool (CA), Le Labo (CA), WORM (NL), STEIM (NL), PAVED arts (CA), Festival International de Cinéma Francophone Acadie (FICFA) (CA), Festival de la Imagen (COL), Sight and Sound (CA) and Festival City Sonics (BE).

Since 2004, he has worked as a composer for films by Jean Ranger made at the SAT, including Six mil Antennas (2011), Entre ciel et terre (2009) and Réflexions / Rélfections (2007). This collaboration exemplifies his interest in new narrative possibilities with panoramic screens and domes.

In 2009, he designed his own immersive audiovisual device made up of twenty screens. He created two works: Dispergere Maiz (2009) covering the symbolism of corn and Memorsion (2010), dealing with the collective memory of abandoned urban structures. From here, he became interested in the three-dimensional properties permitted by the use of multi-screen projections. He wants to further explore presentation style to create non-linear narratives: stories that encourage free interpretation with neither beginning nor end.

In 2012, he developed Light Attraction, an audiovisual performance for powerful lights sculpting the interior of a giant, translucent rectangular prism. Choreography of robotic lights is directly controlled to create dramatic fiction. The performance is inspired by nocturnal insects attraction to light: a metaphor for human obsessive compulsive behaviour.

For his work, Double (2012) he looks at the importance of data duplication in the digital age. Without data sharing and reproduction, forgotten information ceases to exist. In a cluster of transparent plates, bright 3D shapes move continuously in sync with sound. The public is invited to slow the forms for a moment.

In 2013, he developed the audiovisual Blur Rouge series, a series of audiovisual works including an interactive audiovisual installation that creates optical illusion (2014), an audiovisual performance (2013) and two single-channel video (2013). The series is part and parcel of Chantre’s fascination with the use of light in sculpture, with empty spaces and with semi-transparent structures. He draws inspiration from the non-place that people find themselves in when talking on their cell phones. They are neither “physically” present with the people around them, nor with the person they are talking to.

In addition to his solo projects, he founded Popcore which then became Popcore Duo with Simon Laroche. They explore new forms of performance expression, integrating public participation, interactivity and the creation of audiovisual content online. These performances address the deconstruction of robotic body with Popcore Duo (2008), popular contemporary rituals for Popcontinental (2009) and the notion of jousting with Polypingpop (2010).

A music of his projects is distributed in limited edition by a concrete block. It is accessible by connecting a USB cable to a computer.

From 2004 to 2008, Chantre was interested in the old video game consoles with his music project, Taxi Nouveau. During this period, he participated in the expansion of the Montreal Chiptune scene as co-founder of Toy Company.

Chantre also works as a composer, sound designer and video art director for fiction films, filming and various audiovisual productions. He works with artists and organizations such as Ubisoft, the National Film Board, Moment Factory and the Montreal Science Centre.

He holds two Bachelor’s degrees, the first in social anthropology and the second in fine arts and electroacoustic music. He is a program developper, teacher and lecturer for the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT), many high schools, colleges and universities in Canada and Colombia.
